This spring, Chicago Ideas welcomes Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor and writer Alec Baldwin discussing his memoir Nevertheless, Managing Partner at Emerson Collective Arne Duncan and Vera Institute of Justice’s interactive “Reimagining Prison” event, Director of the MIT Media Lab Joi Ito in conversation about creativity & technology, world-renowned political satirist Bassem Youssef on how he became the “Jon Stewart of the Arab World,” and a discussion on the future of human, machine and extraterrestrial intelligence in partnership with Dartmouth College.
The series begins in February with Reimagining Prison, a multi-disciplinary program in partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice that prompts attendees to critically answer the question, “What is prison for?” The onstage portion of the event will feature performances, testimony, conversation and calls to action from community leaders and a formerly incarcerated person.
Chicago Ideas is going further than onstage events this year. For the first time, the Curiosity Series will feature a lineup of action events that aim to help attendees not only learn about important issues on a large scale, but also uncover tangible ways to make an impact in their communities, cities and beyond. February’s action events will include a roundtable discussion that digs into the stigma placed on formerly incarcerated Americans when it comes to seeking employment, and a set of behind-the-scenes tours at the Cook County Jail, which will provide attendees an in-person look at what it’s like to be behind bars.
Keeping with Chicago Ideas’ mission to provide accessible world-class programming, most Curiosity Series tickets start at just $15 and will take place at venue across the city like Jones College Prep High School, Metro Chicago and the Athenaeum Theater.
