EDISON TALKS - Edison Talks are our premier, specially curated day of mind-bending speakers, provocative performances and unique experiences around a single theme.

Have you ever had it UP TO HERE?

You’re frustrated after a line has been crossed.

You’re so far down one path that you struggle to change direction.

You’re facing a challenge so overwhelming that you don’t know where to start.

This Talk focuses not on what got us to our breaking point, but on the possibilities that lie ahead.

Each of the speakers has found themselves UP TO HERE, but refused to accept the limitations “here" and chose instead to take action to get them “there.” Explore those pivotal moments when chaos becomes clarity, fear turns to power and frustration fuels action.

    It’s your move.

    Your impact checklist

Here are a list of things you can do before and after the event to join the conversation.

    • As you heard, Flint, Michigan, is still struggling with the effects of its water crisis. Donate to LeeAnne Walters' nonprofit C Do. Do you see an injustice happening in your community? Use her as inspiration and find ways you can act on the ground.
    • Read about what Marvin Bing is up to and follow his efforts @MarvinBing.
    • Think about starting a conversation with someone new to help yourself come to an understanding of the broader American identity. Ask someone where they're from -- but specifically, where their family immigrated from. And learn more about Hasan Elahi's project at Tracking Transience
    • Listen to Jason Flom's podcast "Wrongful Conviction." Get involved with the Innocence Project by either donating or signing up for their newsletter. You can also assist Chicago-based exonerees by donating goods and services by way of the Exoneration Project.
    • Help Get IN Chicago, an organization working to reduce youth violence and address the underlying systemic issues that lead to it.
    • Take an honest look at your own hidden biases with Harvard’s implicit bias test. You may take the test as a guest.
    • Talk about periods to release the taboo. Why? Think about all the girls around the world who have to miss school because of that taboo.
    • If you're passionate about any issue, not only can you vote, but you can also write your representative or track how your Congressperson votes.

Do you have ideas on what our community can do to get involved? Tell us at our Facebook page and we may add it to this list.
