The Cook County Jail is the largest single site jail in the entire country. At this Lab, attendees will have a chance to take a direct look behind the criminal justice system during a tour of the jail’s oldest division, which opened in 1929. Participants will then visit Division 11, where they’ll learn how the facilities operate and observe programming designed to give those in custody skills to help them when they are released. This Lab will rip down the veil that exists between incarceration facilities and the communities that surround them, providing attendees with an in-person look at what it’s like to be behind bars.
*Attendees must be 21 or older and submit a scanned copy of a government ID two weeks in advance, and bring the ID to the event. Wear modest clothing without any flashy jewelry. No cell phones will be allowed inside. Late arrivals will not be let in.
*The starting point is at the Mental Health Transition Center building entrance located at 2801 S Rockwell, Chicago, IL 60608. Park there and check in at the building entrance.
