LAB - Labs bring together small groups for an exclusive, first-hand look into what happens behind the scenes at some of the most innovative companies, community leaders and institutions around Chicago.

One World, One Water, One Health: Initiatives in Aquatic Medicine

The convergence of human, animal, and environmental domains in today?s world has created a new dynamic ? one that brings with it challenges that are demanding, profound and unprecedented. For aquatic conservationists this brings with it key issues such as loss of aquatic biodiversity, emerging diseases, increased fish consumption worldwide and the role of water in regulating climate change.

One principle helping zoos and aquariums today better understand and address the global health concerns created by this convergence is the concept of One Health ? a practical and innovative approach recognizing the interconnections among humans, animals and their shared ecosystems as well as the economic, cultural and physical factors that influence health.

This Chicago Ideas Week lab will explore the challenges and opportunities specific to several ongoing One Health aquatic conservation programs. Shedd Aquarium?s Dr. Ilze Berzins, Executive Vice President for Animal Health, Conservation, Research and Education will lead a panel of experts as they explore the process required for long-term success ? the collaborative and interdisciplinary projects that combine expertise at local, regional, national and international levels in ecology, animal health, public health, economics, human health and policy.

After the discussion, participants will go behind the scenes to see where it?s all happening. The one-hour tour will include exclusive observation access to Shedd Aquarium?s veterinary hospital, animal care facilities, live food culture area and water quality lab.
