Urban Gardening with Green Teens from Gary Comer Youth Center

    Tuesday, May 22, 2018 5:30 - 7:30 PM @ Gary Comer Youth Center
This event is over! Please check the 2018 schedule.
    Lab
Labs bring together small groups for an exclusive, first-hand look into what happens behind the scenes at some of the most innovative companies, community leaders and institutions around Chicago.

The Gary Comer Youth Center (GCYC) grows more than 23,000 pounds of fresh produce each year on Chicago's South Side, in a USDA-designated "food desert." While working to increase the availability of (and awareness about) healthy fruits and vegetables in their communities, GCYC's youth workers grow and harvest plants and take part in green career exploration. Join Chicago Ideas and GCYC for an evening of hands-on gardening, tasting, and a discussion on the future of sustainable gardening in urban settings. Get your fingers dirty in one of their nearby outdoor gardens, then see their 8,000 square-foot rooftop garden and hear from the GCYC youth about their 1.75-acre farm that produces food for both the local community as well as prominent Chicago restaurants.

Snacks will be provided! Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. All or part of this lab may be affected by weather. Note: Free parking will be located across the street from Gary Comer Youth Center, not in the lot adjacent.
