Screening: Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Creator Nell Scovell
Although it might not seem like it on first glance, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch is groundbreaking television. Created by Nell Scovell and written by mostly women, the show realistically presented the many issues faced by a teenage girl supported by two single women (her aunts). A cult favorite of a generation, it also re-ignited the image of modern, empowered witches in popular culture. Join the A.V. Club and Chicago Ideas for a screening of the Sabrina episode "Mars Attracts." On their winter vacation, the ladies stay at an ice palace/ski lodge on Mars, and Chris Elliot guest stars as an insurance salesman who's interested in Hilda (Caroline Rhea). After the show, Scovell—who also wrote the episode—will sit down with A.V. Club Staff Writer Gwen Ihnat to discuss Sabrina's legacy, continued relevance and upcoming reboot.
