The Harold Washington Library, from Bottom to Top
Explore the Chicago Public Library's main branch, the Harold Washington Library Center, at this Lab that goes behind the scenes of the third largest library system in the country—from bottom to top. At the bottom, see its state-of-the-art sorting machine, which sorts books for delivery to every neighborhood in Chicago. Then head to the library’s ninth floor, where you’ll see highlights from its Special Collections, including such gems as an autograph from Queen Victoria, archival photos of Chicago neighborhoods, and the original score to Grease. Hear from staff of the library about this historic institution and see how they organize and safely house the precious objects inside.
Lab will begin on the ground floor of the Harold Washington Library under the mosaic near the check out desk.
