Hundreds of Books Take Over Chicago’s Transit System

Books on the L is returning to Chicago this Sunday! This city-wide program places books on L trains and station platforms across the city, and encourages people to find inspiration through reading, enjoying and sharing.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago offered their support by having their affiliate organization, Open Books, provide 100 books for the project.

“Books have the power to open us up to new experiences and this effort will engage more residents of Chicago in the act of discovering new ideas,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “A good book can change your world, and open new worlds to you so I applaud Chicago Ideas for bringing this creative initiative again to the City of Chicago.”

Books on the L is taking part in the first-ever Global Sharing Week, June 7-13. Chicago Ideas will circulate books of all genres, including: Living History, by Hillary Rodham Clinton; Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer; Zero to One, by Peter Thiel; and Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn.

Last year, nearly 1,000 books were shared and read by commuters; this year more than 350 books will be distributed during Global Sharing week. An additional 2,000 books will be distributed later this year, again in partnership with Open Books, in late September and early October leading up to Chicago Ideas Week. We will also be distributing children's books leading up to the winter holidays.

A bookmark will be inside each book to inform readers and riders of the program. Hashtags, including #BooksOnTheL and #GlobalSharingDay, have been created to encourage sharing on social media.

Chicago Ideas partnered with Leo Burnett to bring Books on the L to Chicago ahead of the annual Chicago Ideas Week, which takes place October 12-18.
