    Hip-Hop Scholar & Cultural Commentator

    Jay Smooth is a hip-hop scholar and cultural commentator, best known for founding New York's longest running hip-hop radio show, the "Underground Railroad" on WBAI. In recent years, Smooth has made a mark with trenchant social commentary in his Ill Doctrine web series, where videos such as "How to Tell Someone They Sound Racist" have garnered millions of views and been featured by NPR, Salon and MSNBC, where Rachel Maddow hailed Smooth as a "genius." Smooth is based in New York City, where he also provides media strategy for Race Forward, the Center for Racial Justice Innovation.
