    Jessica Buchanan

Humanitarian Aid Worker; Teacher; Co-author, "Impossible Odds"
    4479

Jessica Buchanan is a humanitarian aid-worker, teacher and author. She has spent the last seven years working with communities in Somalia, Somaliland, Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan. In October 2011, while conducting a field training, she was kidnapped by Somali pirates and held hostage at gunpoint, out in the elements, for 93 days. Due to her declining health, President Obama ordered her rescue by the elite Navy Seal Team VI, and she was returned back to her family in January 2012. She and her husband, Erik Landemalm, have written about this experience in a New York Times bestselling memoir entitled, "Impossible Odds", and are currently traveling around, advocating on humanitarian issues in Africa, as well as sharing details of their horrific ordeal.
